The Opportunity

 

The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for Parliamentary Services Level 5 and Parliamentary Services Level 6 Systems and Infrastructure Administrator roles within the Cyber Security Branch.

 

The Information Services Division (ISD) delivers ICT services to DPS staff and users of the Parliamentary computing network and ICT facilities. Within ISD, the Network Security Operations section supports the secure, reliable and effective operation of ICT infrastructure services across on-site, data centre, virtualised, cloud and hybrid environments.

 

These roles will contribute to the administration, support and continuous improvement of DPS-managed infrastructure platforms, including server operating systems, compute, storage, backup, monitoring, virtualisation, cloud and hybrid infrastructure capabilities. The roles will support day-to-day operational services, incident and service request resolution, infrastructure refresh activities, and the transition of project outcomes into sustainable operational support.

 

The Systems and Infrastructure Administrator role will provide ICT systems and infrastructure administration support under limited direction, helping maintain reliable services, perform routine administration activities, support approved changes, contribute to documentation, and work collaboratively with technical teams, vendors and service providers.

 

The Senior Systems and Infrastructure Administrator role will provide senior technical support and advice across more complex infrastructure activities, including planning and coordinating changes, resolving complex incidents, supporting infrastructure migration and transition work, improving operational standards and procedures, and sharing technical knowledge across the team.

Who we are looking for in Systems and Infrastructure Administrator roles:

 

We are looking for motivated ICT professionals who can support the delivery of reliable, secure and well-managed infrastructure services for the Parliament. Successful candidates will be able to work effectively in a technical operations environment, balance business-as-usual support with project and transition activities, and contribute to strong service delivery outcomes.

 

As a Systems and Infrastructure Administrator (PSL 5), your key responsibilities will include:

 

  • Provide ICT systems and infrastructure administration support across DPS-managed on-site, data centre, virtualised, cloud and hybrid environments.
  • Support the deployment, maintenance and operational support of APH ICT infrastructure within agreed service levels, security requirements and operational standards.
  • Perform routine system administration activities, including monitoring, patching, upgrades, backup and restore activities, access support and operational housekeeping.
  • Investigate and resolve infrastructure incidents and service requests, escalating complex issues where required.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, operational procedures, knowledge articles and continuous improvement activities.

 

As a Senior Systems and Infrastructure Administrator (PSL 6), your key responsibilities will include:

 

  • Provide senior ICT systems and infrastructure administration support across complex on-site, data centre, virtualised, cloud and hybrid environments.
  • Plan, coordinate and implement system and infrastructure changes in accordance with approved standards, change management processes and service requirements.
  • Support infrastructure refresh, migration and operational transition activities, including Microsoft Hyper-V, Windows Server, storage, backup, monitoring and related management capabilities.
  • Investigate, analyse and resolve complex incidents, problems and performance issues, including working with vendors and service providers to identify root causes and recommend solutions.
  • Contribute to infrastructure standards, automation, documentation, operational procedures and knowledge transfer to improve reliability, maintainability and security.

 

Job Specific Requirements:

 

  • The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance.
  • Relevant academic and/or professional qualifications in ICT or a related computing field, or demonstrated relevant experience, are desirable.
  • Experience or demonstrated capability in Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware/vSphere/ESXi, Linux, storage, backup and recovery, monitoring, data centre infrastructure, cloud or hybrid infrastructure administration would be highly regarded.
  • The role may require participation in an on-call ICT support roster and occasional out-of-hours work to support operational requirements, project activities and parliamentary sitting periods.

Duty Statement

 

Under limited direction, undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for a Parliamentary Services Level 5 classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: 

 

1.    Provide ICT systems and infrastructure administration support for DPS-managed on-site, data centre, virtualised, cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments, including server operating systems, compute, storage, backup, monitoring and associated infrastructure platforms. 

2.    Support the deployment, implementation, maintenance and operational support of APH ICT infrastructure, ensuring systems and services are maintained within agreed service levels, security requirements and operational standards. 

3.    Contribute to the Infrastructure projects and related transition activities, including supporting the migration and administration of on-site infrastructure platforms such as Microsoft Hyper-V, Windows Server, Linux, storage, backup and supporting management tools. 

4.    Perform routine system administration activities, including monitoring system health, responding to alerts, patching and upgrades, backup and restore activities, user and administrator access support, system checks, and operational housekeeping. 

5.    Assist with installation, configuration, testing, decommissioning and documentation of server, virtualisation, storage, backup and data centre infrastructure components, following approved procedures and change management processes. 

6.    Investigate and resolve ICT infrastructure incidents and service requests, escalating complex issues where required and working with internal teams, vendors and service providers to restore and maintain services. 

7.    Contribute to the development and maintenance of technical documentation, operational procedures, knowledge articles and support material associated with the deployment, management and ongoing operation of DPS infrastructure. 

8.    Support day-to-day BAU “run” activities and the transition of project “build” activities into operational support, including contributing to continuous improvement, standardisation and operational readiness. 

9.    Work collaboratively with other Operations teams, Cyber Security, application owners, vendors and business stakeholders to support reliable and secure services for the Parliament. 

10.    Undertake other duties, including project and operational support activities, as required.

1.    Provide senior ICT systems and infrastructure administration support across DPS-managed on-site, data centre, virtualised, cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments, ensuring services are maintained, secure, reliable and fit for operational needs. 

2.    Plan, coordinate and implement system and infrastructure changes in accordance with approved standards, change management processes, security requirements, release schedules and agreed service levels.
3.    Provide senior technical support for the Infrastructure Refresh project and related work packages, including the design, implementation, migration and operational transition of on-site infrastructure platforms, with a focus on Microsoft Hyper-V, Windows Server, storage, backup, monitoring and supporting management capabilities. 

4.    Investigate, analyse and resolve complex ICT infrastructure incidents, problems and performance issues, including coordinating with internal teams, vendors and service providers to identify root causes, recommend solutions and communicate operational impacts. 

5.    Support the transition from legacy and existing infrastructure platforms, including VMware/ESXi environments, into future supported platforms such as Microsoft Hyper-V and related Microsoft infrastructure technologies. 

6.    Provide technical guidance and practical support for system installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, capacity management, backup and restore, disaster recovery, security hardening and operational monitoring activities. 

7.    Contribute to the development, implementation and improvement of infrastructure standards, operational procedures, automation, documentation and support models to improve the reliability, maintainability and security of DPS infrastructure services. 

8.    Provide subject matter expertise and knowledge transfer to team members, supporting capability uplift across Microsoft server technologies, virtualisation, data centre infrastructure, cloud/hybrid infrastructure, backup, monitoring and operational support practices. 

9.    Engage and partner with other DPS technical teams, Cyber Security, application owners, business stakeholders, vendors and service providers to build service delivery capability and support infrastructure outcomes. 

10.   Evaluate and provide advice on new or emerging infrastructure technologies, tools and operating models to support current and future DPS requirements. 
11.   Undertake other duties, including project work and operational support activities, as required.

Salary

  

Currently, the salary range for this position is PSL5 $92,450 - $99,185 and PSL6 $101,168 - 113,706 per annum.

 

Conditions of Employment

Employment opportunities at the department are subject to a range of conditions prescribed in the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 which include:

  • Australian citizenship: Section 22 of the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 requires that employees of the Parliamentary Service are generally required to be Australian citizens. However, if you are not an Australian citizen you may be considered for engagement on the condition that you are able to gain Australian Citizenship within a specified time. Failure to obtain citizenship within the timeframe could lead to termination of employment.

  • Loss and resumption of Australian citizenship: Under historical provisions of the Australian Citizenship Act 1948 (section 17), some Australian citizens automatically lost their citizenship if they voluntarily acquired the citizenship of another country between 26 January 1949 and 3 April 2002. This loss occurred by operation of law and may not have been known to the individual at the time. Although these provisions were repealed in 2002 to allow dual citizenship, the repeal did not restore citizenship that was previously lost. Individuals who believe they may be affected are recommended to seek advice about resuming their Australian citizenship. Further information, is available on the Department of Home Affairs website.
    • Applicants who progress to the offer stage with our department who have been affected by the loss of citizenship as outlined above will be required to demonstrate within a reasonable time that they have resumed, or are actively undertaking the process to resume, Australian citizenship.

  • Security clearance and character clearance: the preferred applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the level specified, as well as complete and be deemed suitable through a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.

  • Health assessment: a pre-employment health assessment will be required where there are physical or medical requirements for the role.

  • External Work Approval: Employees must seek approval for any paid employment outside the department and declare voluntary activities that could impact their role.
