The Opportunity
The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a Senior Library Assistant within the Parliamentary Library. The Parliamentary Library provides high-quality information, analysis and advice to Senators and Members of Parliament in support of their parliamentary and representational roles.
This position sits within the Library Collections and Systems Branch, and undertakes print and electronic collection maintenance activities and assists in maintaining records in the library system. This includes accessioning and processing print and electronic serials items, archiving electronic serials, assisting in maintaining print collection, binding the library collection, claiming of missing serial issues, and liaising with clients, internal staff and external agencies for the successful delivery of library products and services.

Applicants should have a strong client focus, attention to detail, excellent communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team. We require flexible, proactive individuals with strong digital literacy skills and a willingness to learn new skills.
Qualifications in library and/or information studies recognised by the Australian Library and Information Association, or equivalent library experience is also desirable.

Job Specific Requirements:
• The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

Duty Statement

Section: Collection Management
Immediate supervisor: Senior Acquisitions and Serials Officer
Under general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for Parliamentary Service Level 3. The duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Efficiently accession and process items for the library collection, ensuring accurate goods receipt of material and maintenance of collection records.
2. Use library systems to accession and archive digital collection items.
3. Liaise with clients, internal staff, and external agencies for the successful delivery of library products and services, including conducting independent investigation for the claiming of missing serial issues and updating of routing lists.
4. Ensure a well-organised and accessible library collection through maintenance and enhancement activities including: routine shelving, shelf reading, serials weeding, and binding and relocation of material.
5. Participate in other operational work within the section to contribute to the achievement of team and organisation goals.
6. Support the development and implementation of library policies and procedures through accurate data management and service delivery.
7. Contribute to corporate activities as required.

Selection Criteria
1. Library experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
- maintaining and updating digital collections
- print collection maintenance and stock management
- sourcing, acquiring, and processing collection resources, and maintaining associated financial records in line with defined procedures
2. Strong digital literacy skills, and demonstrated ability to quickly adapt to new systems, ensuring the effective maintenance and enhancement of library collections.
3. Complete tasks with attention to detail, and to agreed priorities.
4. Effective written and oral communication skills, and an ability to liaise effectively with clients.
5. Ability to actively contribute to a collaborative and efficient work environment with strong teamwork, organisational, and time management skills.
6. General awareness of politics and current affairs.
7. Other requirements: May require physical capacity to operate storage units and to manually handle collection material up to 6kg.

Salary
Currently, the salary range for this position is $75,685 - $79,091 per annum.
Conditions of Employment
Employment opportunities at Department of Parliamentary Services are subject to a range of conditions prescribed in the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 which include:
• Australian citizenship – to be eligible for employment with DPS, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
• Security clearance and character clearance – the preferred applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the level specified, as well as complete and be deemed suitable through a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.
• Health assessment – a pre-employment health assessment will be required where there are physical or medical requirements for the role.
