The Opportunity

 

The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a Parliamentary Service Level 4 Maintenance HVAC-R Tradesperson within Property Services Branch.

 

Maintenance Services at Parliament House is responsible for repairs and maintenance of the buildings structure, fabric, finishes, landscape, and all engineering services such as air-conditioning, power, lighting, hydraulic services and movement systems. 

 

As part of the Mechanical Services team, the successful candidates will be required to contribute to the overall service delivery of Mechanical Services by undertaking tasks including, but not limited to, maintenance and repair works to a wide variety of plant and equipment, HVAC installation and minor project engagements.

 

The role requires working with a wide variety of clients, both internal and external to the Parliament, in a dynamic work environment where priorities and deadlines frequently change. The team provides the resources to carry out planned and breakdown maintenance with a mix of in-house trade staff and external contractors.

 

Who we are looking for

 

DPS is seeking HVAC technicians with skills across maintenance, construction or industrial Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration to maintain one of Australia’s most iconic buildings.


We offer a flexible and varied work environment, with generous leave and flexibility allowances, and operate a cyclic maintenance calendar. We work on over 24 Air handler units the size of an Action bus, maintain over 10 cool rooms/freezers and their associated plant and maintain the satisfaction of over 3000 building occupants thermal comfort.

Job Specific Requirements

  • Australian Citizenship
  • Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
  • Current ArcTick Licence
  • Ability to work at height
  • Trade qualifications relevant to the duties with related experience
  • Work flexible working arrangements (up to 30% including 9 weekend days) to meet operational requirements including Parliamentary sitting, shifts, on-call rosters, out of hours works, weekends and duties as required, in the current Departmental Enterprise Agreement 2024 and any future agreements
  • The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

 

Desired: 

  • Enter and work in Confined Spaces certification and/or experience
  • Licensed to perform high-risk work (for example, WP-Boom type elevating work platform class)
  • Refrigerant and glycol-based system fault finding and installation experience
  • Large industrial scale boiler & chiller operation
  • Building Maintenance System integration and Programmed Logic Controller experience

Duty Statement

  

Classification: Parliamentary Service Level 4 

Branch: Property Services 

Section: Maintenance Services 

Immediate supervisor: Manager Mechanical Services 

 

Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the Parliamentary Service Level 4 classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

1. Undertake all works, including maintenance, installations, testing and commissioning requiring the 
application of relevant trade skills, in a proactive manner, ensuring the highest levels of maintenance to 
the building, plant and equipment. 


2. Undertake tasks as a member of the Mechanical Services team in either a workshop situation or in the 
field, with minimal supervision, including outside designated hours, sitting periods, shift and on-call duties 
as required. 


3. Work under limited supervision, assist senior staff to ensure all scheduled and ad-hoc tasks are completed in a timely manner. 


4. Assist in the guidance, direction and support of apprentices, other staff including various internal and 
external stakeholders, along with monitoring the works of contractors. 


5. Report and record on completed tasks and other requirements to supervisors and ensure relevant 
information is entered in the computerised maintenance system. 


6. Have and maintain suitable levels of fitness for work, including but not limited to, working at height, first aid, confined space entry and rescue, climbing ladders, elevated platform access works, lifting, extensive walking and other physical activities as required. 


7. Ensure the highest standards of safety, in all areas of operation, in compliance with Work Health and 
Safety policy. 


8. Other duties as requested

3. Can you describe a time when you had to troubleshoot a complex fault in a building's plant or equipment? Walk us through your approach, including how you analysed schematics, identified the issue, and maintained a safe work environment. How did you keep senior managers informed throughout the process, manage their expectations, and communicate the outcome effectively?

Salary

 

Currently, the salary range for this position is $80,672 - $87,659 per annum.

 

Conditions of Employment
