The Opportunity

 

The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a Parliamentary Service Level 5 Auspic Photographer within Digital Recording Services. 

 

Auspic sits within the Digital Recording Services Branch of the Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) and provides official photography services to the Australian Parliament. The branch plays a critical role in documenting parliamentary proceedings, significant national events and visits by Guests of Government, ensuring Australia’s parliamentary history is captured accurately and professionally.

 

As an Auspic Photographer, you will work as part of a small, highly skilled team delivering high‑quality photography across portraits, studio work, events and locations for parliamentarians, parliamentary services and other Commonwealth agencies. The role operates under limited to general supervision and contributes directly to the visual record of Australia’s democracy.

We are seeking a professional photographer who:

 

  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills and works effectively in a collaborative team environment

  • Shows initiative, sound judgement and knows when to seek advice from senior staff
  • Demonstrates attention to detail, accuracy and professionalism in all aspects of their work 

 

You will bring:

 

  • Proven professional expertise in contemporary digital photography, with a minimum of five years’ experience in a large public, institutional or comparable environment
  • Demonstrated experience using and managing a digital asset management system within a photographic or imaging workflow
  • Sound knowledge of current digital photography technologies, processes and industry standards
  • A high level of expertise in Adobe Photoshop
  • A basic understanding and appreciation of the role and operations of the Australian Parliament

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Demonstrated experience as a professional photographer is essential
  • Professional photography qualifications are desirable
  • Experience in the Australian Parliament House Press Gallery, photojournalism or media environments will be well regarded but is not essential
  • Portfolio requirement

 

Applicants must submit a portfolio of 3 to 6 photographs of recent work:

 

  • Images must have been taken within the last 12 months
  • Each image must include a short photographer statement
  • No more than six images are to be submitted

 
The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

Duty Statement

 

Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the specified classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

1. Carry out a wide range of photography for the Australian Parliament and Commonwealth agencies, including portraits, studio work, events and locations.

 

2. Use professional photography equipment and software to produce high-quality digital images that meet technical standards and business requirements, including image editing, colour management and correct file naming.

 

3. Check image files and metadata to ensure they meet quality standards before being added to the Digital Asset Management System (DAMS). 

 

4. Keep skills and technical knowledge up to date by staying informed about developments in photography and identifying opportunities to improve work practices. 

 

5. Support the day-to-day operation of the AUSPIC office and studio by managing the diary, phone and email enquiries, acting as the main contact point, and delivering images to internal clients on time.

 

6. Maintain photographic and studio equipment and research replacement equipment when required. 


Selection Criteria 

1. Relevant qualifications and/or proven professional expertise, with a minimum of five years’ experience in contemporary digital photography practices and image data management within a large public, institutional or comparable environment.
 

2. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and build effective relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
 

3. Demonstrated experience in using and managing a digital asset management system within an imaging or photographic workflow.

 

4. Sound knowledge of current digital photography technologies, processes and industry standards.
 

5. A basic understanding and appreciation of the role and operations of the Australian Parliament.

 

6. Proven ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, solve problems and work with initiative under limited supervision, including recognising when to seek advice from senior staff.

Salary

  

Currently, the salary range for this position is $92,450 - $99,185 per annum.

 

Conditions of Employment

Employment opportunities at the department are subject to a range of conditions prescribed in the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 which include:

 

Australian citizenship: Section 22 of the Parliamentary Service Act 1999 requires that employees of the Parliamentary Service are generally required to be Australian citizens. However, if you are not an Australian citizen you may be considered for engagement on the condition that you are able to gain Australian Citizenship within a specified time. Failure to obtain citizenship within the timeframe could lead to termination of employment.

 

Loss and resumption of Australian citizenship: Under historical provisions of the Australian Citizenship Act 1948 (section 17), some Australian citizens automatically lost their citizenship if they voluntarily acquired the citizenship of another country between 26 January 1949 and 3 April 2002. This loss occurred by operation of law and may not have been known to the individual at the time. Although these provisions were repealed in 2002 to allow dual citizenship, the repeal did not restore citizenship that was previously lost. Individuals who believe they may be affected are recommended to seek advice about resuming their Australian citizenship. Further information, is available on the Department of Home Affairs website.Applicants who progress to the offer stage with our department who have been affected by the loss of citizenship as outlined above will be required to demonstrate within a reasonable time that they have resumed, or are actively undertaking the process to resume, Australian citizenship.

 

Security clearance and character clearance: the preferred applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the level specified, as well as complete and be deemed suitable through a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.

 

Health assessment: a pre-employment health assessment will be required where there are physical or medical requirements for the role.

 

External Work Approval: Employees must seek approval for any paid employment outside the department and declare voluntary activities that could impact their role.
